Hello from Nor’wester!
We’ve had a wonderful time together since the last post, diving fully into program, more overnights, and a festive Island Fair Day. We were sad to say good-bye to our youngest campers – the Archers and Explorers – on Monday morning. They added so much laughter and vibrancy and we will miss their silly jokes, insights on life and their many other wonderful contributions to our community.
Dances are a strong tradition here at camp, with each unit having an opportunity to attend at least two dances through the session. Live music from our music staff and other talented staff members provides the grounding for a really fun evening full of circle dances, square dances, contra dance and just-for-fun dances. These dances have been taught to campers for many years – and on the final night of camp everyone participates in an all-camp dance.
From Adobe Oven to Garden Parties to Campfire Skits to Nature Activities, we are keeping your campers busy! Not only do they get to have a schedule custom-catered to them by their unit leaders, but they also have the opportunity to choose open activities on Sundays as well as either do younger or older unit specials on certain days. This gives campers a chance to not only experience all of the activities that camp offers, but also explore specific interests in different areas.
Island Fair Day is one of those celebratory days where the ‘fun-ometer’ just keeps rising and rising with each passing activity. The morning starts with milk carton boat building, pie making, booth building and sign making. The afternoon brings a fun run, waterfront regatta and beach time, and this year, a scavenger hunt. After dinner is the pinnacle event – Carnival! – where each unit hosts a booth. There were soooo many unique contributions and creative ideas – from ‘fishing for compliments’ to ‘Pio-tube’ to the ever-popular ‘marriage booth’. An amazing day played out in true island style.
With a couple more overnights under our belts, hours of singing time in the lodge, and friendships continuing to be formed, creativity and talent continues to ooze out of these amazing campers at Musicale, during Skits and in casual dinner conversation. We are loving this opportunity to know your campers with such depth and intention — future local and world leaders are among us!
Big Trips are back as of today and our Foresters and Voyageurs are preparing for their Little Big Trips that leave on Monday. And starting tomorrow is Visitor’s Weekend! So if you are traveling to our little piece of paradise, we wish you a safe journey and look forward to meeting you in person — and if you’re not heading this way, we’ll keep you posted on the next great adventures of Second Session 2013!
In the Spirit of Nor’wester –
Sheila
