Greetings from Johns Island,

The last few days have been busy and exciting, with successful overnights, the start of regular program activities, campfires and more. Orientation Day was spent touring the island and various departments, learning all about each other, and getting acquainted with camp systems and traditions.

Meals are the great connecting time between all units, with plenty of time to hang out before hand and play frisbee, talk on the steps, or catch up on a good book before the meal.

Our Introductory Campfire brought many jokes, skits, interesting themes and of course, a lot of laughter. Our mountaineers started the evening with their ‘beach bum’ skit then plunged into the chilly water (pre-planned, lifeguard on hand) then raced back to the campfire stage for final bow.

Our Troubadours performed a clever rap to introduce everyone in the unit and where they’re from. Whether a camper is extroverted or shy, campfires are a safe place for everyone to feel supported and seen in a new way, each participating to their own comfort level. 1. Trou Campfire_web

Overnights came quickly in the session, bringing units an opportunity to come together and work on the common goal of packing, getting to their destination, setting up a tarp shelter and cooking food over a fire. Even though the rain came a few hours before waking up, causing a few sleeping bags to get wet, enthusiasm and the love of adventure prevailed! Everyone made it back with good stories and a well-earned sense of accomplishment.

Some units stayed on-island, some went on a kayak or canoe overnight, one went on a biking adventure on San Juan, and our oldest girls were able to go rock climbing to Deception Pass for a special two-night overnight. Through our overnight program we strive to educate on Leave No Trace principles, knots, shelter building, and stewardship and harmony with the environment. It is also an excellent opportunity to work with any group dynamics that emerge.

We are now on our third day of regular programming – departments are kicking into high gear, with sailboats out on the water, inspired projects blossoming in the craft shop, teamwork being honed on the challenge course and great aim being taken on the archery field.

Sunday is our grounding day where we look forward to a day of sleeping-in (30 minutes extra!), Chapel, ‘Dinner’ which is our Sunday lunch, Musicale – a fantastic opportunity for anyone to share their talent to an eager and supportive audience, Open Activities and finally, Nosebags (our Sunday picnic dinner where each unit eats at a different location on the island).

With a sunny forecast on the horizon, all is good and bright here on our little slice o’ paradise called Johns. We’ll be back in touch with more news, pictures, guest bloggers, and more. Until then, know that your campers are in good and caring hands and we are loving every minute of our time with them.

In the Spirit of Norwester,

Sheila
