Dear Families and Friends –
With perfect summer temperatures guiding our days, we are having a fantastic experience with your children here at camp. We had another successful overnight on Tuesday, spent some in-depth time in our core programs areas and had a jam-packed day of fun yesterday for the 4th of July celebration. More pictures will be coming on that, but for now, here’s a run-down of the last week.
As you may know, music is an integral part of what we do together here at Nor’wester. We sing songs after lunch and dinner, accompanied by both staff and campers on many different instruments – guitar, banjo, violin, ukulele, mandolin, washboard, tambourine, piano and more. Many songs date back to the beginning of camp and some are newer and have been added over the years. We also do a special Sunday event called Musicale, where anyone can sign up to perform their preferred talent – singing, instrumental, poetry, jokes and more. We are always impressed with the variety and quality of offerings that our campers and staff share.
All of our department staff have been working hard to provide a rich and unique experience for the campers. From creative craft shop pursuits to dramatic endeavors on the drama stage, days are full and friendships are growing.
Our overnights were much drier this week – and units were able to expand their horizons by visiting a different site than last week. This week our menu consisted of pita pizzas, jelly jammies, banana boats and egg-in-a-hole. Our oldest boys unit was able to do a two-night service trip over to Lopez Island to work with the Lopez Community Land Trust. Their volunteerism was greatly appreciated by many.
Speaking of service, our campers have also been contributing to our camp community by working in the garden, helping Camp Ops with projects, and the oldest campers have had the opportunity to work a short shift in the kitchen. It takes all of us to make camp what it is — a dynamic and resilient framework for growth and learning.
More news and pictures from the 4th to come soon. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and we’ll post again soon!
Warm Wishes,
Sheila
