Hearty hellos from Johns Island –

Although the 4th of July festivities happened a week ago, we thought you would enjoy seeing some of the captured moments from our jam-packed day of fun. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day, with just-right temperatures, cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven, strawberries, blueberries and yogurt, followed by a musical parade out of the lodge leading to our formal flag raising to honor our country’s independence.

The morning was dedicated to bringing creative ideas to fruition, including setting up the carnival booths (each unit comes up with a theme for their booth), milk carton boat building (each unit gets to use 15 milk cartons and 6 feet of duct tape) and gourmet pie making (sky’s the limit! – from butterscotch/bacon pie to savory chicken pie to caramel apple delight…).

We also enjoyed a fun run around the island, watermelon, waterfront regatta with both canoes and kayaks, the traditional launching of the milk carton boats, and pie awards.

Everyone eagerly awaited the traditional salmon bake bbq, with some campers and staff even using cedar planks as their dinner plates. Campers helped to collect bark for the fire while Paul Henriksen, former long-time Nor’wester Director, Lars (son of Paul and Christa) and Jill, our wonderful Assistant Director cooked the salmon to perfection.

The carnival that evening was a huge hit, with many clever and funny things to see and participate in. There was ‘Boothception’, a beauty boutique, finger friends, a ‘count your chins’ contest, chill booth, origami and more. We all fell into bed, exhausted from a full and rich day of celebration, connection, silliness and fun.

We hope your holiday weekend was also tremendous, and look forward to seeing some of you at our upcoming Visitor’s Day Weekend. More to come on Archers/Explorers Departure, Big Trips, and Nell Robinson Day!
