Last Week Together

2020-08-19T23:36:36-07:00July 28th, 2011|First Session|

Let me start by saying that I thought I posted this blog on Sunday morning after the campers left us but I inadvertantly left it as a draft.  My apologies to those of you who were expecting to hear about our final week of first session. It has been a wonderful last week - weather [...]

Small Camp

2020-08-19T23:36:37-07:00July 18th, 2011|First Session|

With the older units away on their extended trips the middle units ruled the roost.  Foresters hosted a Sunday Chapel on the topic of Music.   Tuesday was Nell Robinson Day, a celebration of the woman who lived on Johns Island for many decades, raising children and sheep.  Campers signed up for 'special activities' in the morning, and [...]

A Busy Week

2020-08-19T23:36:37-07:00July 10th, 2011|First Session|

This has been our week: Fourth of July - a morning full of pie making, milk-carton boat building, and Carnival booth construction.  Incredibly the weather was beautiful from first light and only improved through the day (typically we start the 4th with grey skies and drizzle, occasionally enjoying clear skies by late afternoon).   Almost 30 [...]

Our First Week

2020-08-19T23:36:37-07:00July 4th, 2011|First Session|

We have just left the lodge after enjoying a wonderful Sunday mid-day meal, followed by the first Musicale of the summer.  As our Music Director said, "Musicale is like a talent show that everybody wins."  After every Sunday dinner, campers and staff perform in front of the camp community.  Today we were entertained by a solo [...]

They’re Here!

2020-08-19T23:36:37-07:00June 28th, 2011|First Session|

Everyone arrived safe and sound yesterday afternoon.  The stars aligned for a seamless Travel Day, with only a few sleeping bags going temporarily AWOL.  By bedtime all campers were reunited with their belongings, night-time medications had been distributed and teeth brushed.  The weather cooperated, providing scattered to cloudy skies but no rain until everyone was [...]

Where Did The Time Go?

2020-08-19T23:36:38-07:00July 24th, 2010|First Session|

My apologies.  The last time I wrote we were anticipating visitors and the departure of Little Big Trips.  Suddenly I find that we are packing trunks, exchanging addresses and locating misplaced items.  As usual, the Nor’wester time machine kicked into high gear just after Visitor’s Weekend and we suddenly find ourselves preparing to say good [...]

They’re Coming Back

2020-08-19T23:36:38-07:00July 15th, 2010|First Session|

This is a quick update because, with Visitor’s Weekend coming up, it is unlikely I will be able to do a Sunday posting. As I type, three of our Big Trips have arrived back safe and sound.  The kayak, Hunt canoe and sailing trips are busy getting gear and left-over provisions taken care of, enjoying [...]

Goodbyes and See You Soons

2020-08-19T23:36:38-07:00July 11th, 2010|First Session|

Two early morning departures shrunk our community from 250 to 150 in 48 hours.  Our youngest campers, Archers, Explorers and Woodsmen left our dock at about 7:00am Saturday.  Their time on Johns flew by – many of the people gathered to see them off kept remarking “I can’t believe they’re leaving already!”  Friday night the [...]

Cool Start

2020-08-19T23:36:39-07:00July 5th, 2010|First Session|

Today is a “Sleep-In” breakfast – casual buffet, come in your pj’s or don’t come at all.  It was a busy July 4th (although it felt a bit like January 4th) and everyone is happy to get a few extras hours of sleep. The day started with Pie Making, Milk Carton boat construction and Carnival [...]

Safe and Sound

2010-06-28T16:02:15-07:00June 28th, 2010|First Session|

Everyone arrived safe and sound.  We had a wonderful dinner, followed by songs and introductions.  Luggage was distributed, missing items located and reunited with their owners. Campers and staff are now in their units getting settled into bed.  Orientation day tomorrow!
