One Week Left? Holy Cow!

2020-08-19T23:36:36-07:00August 17th, 2011|Second Session|

So said a camper to me this morning.  We're all beginning to feel the approaching last day and we still have 6 go to.  Since I last wrote: Candidates for the Director position came to spend time on the property, along with members of the Transition Committee.  I apologize if you're wondering what this means.  [...]

Half Way

2020-08-19T23:36:36-07:00August 10th, 2011|Second Session|

It's funny how time works here on Johns Island.  A day can last a lifetime but now we're half way through the session and it seems like things are beginning to move at warp speed.   Someone made a comment the other day 'It's like being in Narnia.  You don't actually know how long you've been [...]

First Week Completed

2020-08-19T23:36:36-07:00August 3rd, 2011|Second Session|

It's hard to believe the campers arrived just a week ago.  Today units are going on their second overnight, all department areas are in full swing, olders campers have submitted their top choices for Big Trips and our youngest campers are talking about which activities they want to do more of before they leave. Highlights [...]

Session Two Is Underway

2020-08-19T23:36:36-07:00July 28th, 2011|Second Session|

Second session campers are on the property and they are busy.  Thirteen Units will visit 12 different departments/areas for Orientation Day.  I hesitate to say it, but it looks like summer today!  Good weather and soft off shore breezes help to make this 'getting to know departments" day a bit easier.  Campers will also visit [...]

Losing Track of Time

2020-08-19T23:36:37-07:00August 19th, 2010|Second Session|

My sincere apologies.  It seemed like a minute ago it was Sunday evening of visitors weekend and I was drafting a blog entry in my ming and suddenly it’s Thursday morning!  This last week is known for its warp speed and I’m afraid I got caught up in it.  When you suddenly see the end [...]

Early Goodbyes

2020-08-19T23:36:38-07:00August 8th, 2010|Second Session|

Today marks the midway point of second session.  The lodge is beginning to resonate with comments like “Really, the little campers are leaving tomorrow?” and “I can’t believe that Big Trips leave in the morning!”.  Both these events serve as session mile stones – once the youngest campers head home and the oldest campers leave [...]

Getting Settled In

2020-08-19T23:36:38-07:00August 1st, 2010|Second Session|

Today is Sunday, a unique day in the Nor’wester week.  Breakfast will be served at a relaxed 8:30AM rather than 8:00AM.   After breakfast units will return to their personal piece of real estate to hang-out and clean up for their weekly inspection that will happen this afternoon.  There is time set aside every morning [...]

Half Way

2020-08-19T23:36:39-07:00August 1st, 2009|Second Session|

Looking back - Friday was Island Fair Day, our Second Session version of Independence Day (without the Salmon Bake).  We were busy baking pies, building Milk Carton boats, setting up Carnival booths.  It was a full day - Wayfarers won Best of Show in pie making with their Pecan Pie; Rangers won the canoe race [...]

Settling In

2020-08-19T23:36:39-07:00July 26th, 2009|Second Session|

The bell calling everyone to Chapel has rung and Units have made their way to the north side of the property. We gathered there to reflect on the past week and the topic of “Self”; how we develop into an individual, who influences us, how we can change things about ourself.  To paraphrase an analogy presented by a thoughtful camper  ”We [...]

Hot Tamales!

2009-07-23T15:49:09-07:00July 23rd, 2009|Second Session|

All Second Session campers arrived on Johns late afternoon yesterday! Most were a bit fatigued by the heat -in the upper 90’s in Seattle-Anacortes pick up areas - a cool 88 degrees here on the island. But positive attitudes were maintained by all, along with their hydration status. Lots of H20 being distributed and consumed. [...]
