All Second Session campers arrived on Johns late afternoon yesterday! Most were a bit fatigued by the heat -in the upper 90’s in Seattle-Anacortes pick up areas – a cool 88 degrees here on the island. But positive attitudes were maintained by all, along with their hydration status. Lots of H20 being distributed and consumed.

Today is orientation day – everyone visits all the departments to review safety rules and expected behavior. The weather will cooperate by cooling down by 5-10 degrees. That will be appreciated by everyone. Tonight we will have our Opening Campfire , hosted by our incredible kitchen staff, where each unit will introduce its members through some sort of skit.

Things move quickly at the opening of Second Session. All units will be having their first overnight of the session this Friday afternoon. The four oldest units will be leaving the property – Mountaineers in kayaks to San Juan Island, Troubadours in the Haida and Hunts canoes to Satellite Island, Islanders will be on Waldron enjoying an organic farm and the Wayfarers will be on Orcas on the property of Jack and Jan Helsell, directors of Camp Nor’wester from 1967 – 1980. The Voyageurs will paddle canoes to Reid Harbor on Stuart Island. Everyone else will be on property. Despite the predictions of clear, warm weather all units will be practicing tarp shelter construction and Low Impact Camping principles.

Saturday night will be our first regular campfire, hosted by the Islander unit. Sunday morning the Voyageurs will host our first Chapel – a weekly, all-camp event, where a topic of interest to the hosting unit (communication, friendship, responsibility) is presented.

Sunday is our scheduling day for the upcoming week – so you’ll have to wait until Monday to find out what’s happening next …
