Safe and Sound!

Everyone arrived at camp, safe and sound on Monday. We had only two campers who were asked to spend another night at home as a precaution. Neither showed signs of Swine Flu but the brother recently had symptoms of stomach flu.  They are now both symptom free and have joined the rest of us on Johns.

The weather is incredible for our first week, very sunny, with a slight off shore breeze. Tuesday was spent with all Units being oriented to our various departments, meeting with the nurse and generally getting the feel of Camp Nor’wester.

That night each Unit performed an ‘Introductions’ skit at the first all-camp campfire, with each camper sharing with the community their name and where they are from.

Today, Wednesday, all departments are in full swing – kayaks and canoes out on the Waterfront, seeds being prepared for sprouting at the Garden, an exploration of percussion happening in Music and various crafty projects being started in the Craftshop.

The first Overnight of the session will be Thursday afternoon. Five Units will be leaving the property – Voyaguers by canoe to Reid Harbor on Stuart Island; Wayfarers by kayaks to San Juan Island; Troubadours in the dug-out canoes to Satellite Island and the Mountaineers by van to Lopez Island. The Mountaineers will be participating in a service project with the Lopez Island Community Land Trust. The other units will be staying on Johns. All will have some Unit alone time, learning low impact camping skills, and getting to know each other better. Typically this is the time that Units work on their Code of Conduct – a list of expectations the Unit develops together outlining how they want to relate to each other as members of their Unit.

The Camp calendar is flexible and because the overnight falls so close to July 4th we will be celebrating Independence Day on July 7th! More about that next week.

Thank you for sharing you camper with us. If you ever have any concerns please do not hesitate to call the Camp office. 360-468-2225 non-emergency; 360-472-1382 emergency or time sensitive issues.
