At Camp Nor’wester, the Unit System is the backbone of our programming, creating a unique environment where campers of similar age and gender live together and share their camp experience. Units spend more or less all day, every day together; they participate in activities, eat meals, and live as a group. This summer’s first session has provided numerous examples of how living together, participating in activities, and facing challenges as a unit fosters personal growth, camaraderie, and a deep sense of community among our campers.

Living Together with Peers

Spending a month living with peers provides many opportunities for growth and learning. Grouping by age means that campers not only share their camp experiences but often are going through similar phases of life outside of camp. Living in a unit of approximately 12-15 peers can also be really hard. Campers have to learn to communicate with each other, set boundaries, and navigate disagreements. Because many campers return year after year, it’s incredible to watch group dynamics change and evolve while making space for new friends to join.

Unit Adventures

During the first session, the Troubadours (16-year-olds) worked together to host a Scooby-Doo-themed Coffee House, which was planned during their Raven’s Nest overnight to Stuart Island.

Recently, the Mariners (11-year-olds) worked together to pull a “prank” by jumping (setting the tables) for the whole lodge ahead of lunch.

On their two-night overnight to Orcas Island, the Pioneers (12-year-olds) worked together to set up camp, cook meals, and occupy their time together.

Pathfinders

The Pathfinders (15-year-olds) have handled several obstacles gracefully and come out on the other side as a closer unit. (Did you see the Instagram post of them jumping off the dock holding hands?)

A stand-out skit in the opening campfire was by the Vagabonds (12-year-olds), who introduced themselves with a parody gender reveal video. Their initial success inspired them to host a campfire in our second week.

A Community Like No Other

Our Unit System is more than just a framework for living and programming; it’s the heart of the Camp Nor’wester experience. This summer’s first session at Camp Nor’wester has highlighted the incredible value of our Unit System. By living, playing, and overcoming challenges, our campers have created lasting bonds and a profound sense of belonging. The environment created by the Unit System allows each camper to grow, learn, and thrive, leaving with cherished memories and newfound confidence.
