When the Younger Units Run Camp
When the older campers are away, the rest of Camp gets to play!
This past week, the four oldest units were out on Big Trips (more about trips later this month). Monday-Wednesday, the Islanders and Wayfarers were on two-night overnights. When the Foresters and Voyageurs are the oldest campers on Johns Island, that means it’s time for Nell Robinson Day!
Nell Day is an all-camp (small Camp) day named after the former steward and owner of Nor’wester’s property. On Nell Day, the 8 youngest units are split into five color teams: pink, yellow, green, orange, and purple. Each team is supported by two staff members and led by Forester and Voyageur captains.
The morning is filled by dressing up in team colors, getting face paint, and special activities that campers sign up for individually (rather than with their units or teams).
After a fun lunch where campers sit with their color teams and a longer Rest Hour, the teams compete in a camp-wide scavenger hunt for a watermelon. Points are awarded at each stop on the scavenger hunt, for finishing the scavenger hunt, and for creativity during evening campfire skits.
Staff-led skits punctuate the whole day giving a funny, silly, creative context to the scavenger hunt.
Congratulations to the Yellow Team for their win this Nell Day!
