We’re already four days into First Session, and our campers are having a great time settling into camp life.

On Tuesday, the first full day of the session, all the units visited the various activity areas for program orientations. Our department staff walked everyone through the expectations, procedures, and safety rules for each area. They made sure to include space for discussion of projects and goals that campers would like to complete this summer. Campers have fantastic plans for things they’d like to build, cook, craft, and try! Most units even had time to play a game or two at the departments they visited.

Pioneers intro campfire skit

The Pioneers fully embraced the option to incorporate costumes into their campfire skit!

After dinner that night, it was time for the first campfire of the session. Each unit presented a skit that introduced the names and hometowns of each of their members. Memorable among them was the Western-themed skit performed by the Mountaineers (who dueled each other with spray bottles), and the candy shop scene put on by the Archers, who each requested their favorite kind of (imaginary) candy from the unit staff/candy shop workers. Topping it all off was the “Planet Earth: Johns Island” mockumentary skit, presented by the craft shop and waterfront staff, which interviewed various island “animals” and slipped clever unit-name-inspired puns into their dialogue.

campfire laughter

Laughter is contagious – especially during hilarious campfire skits!

Apart from the all-camp events, units have enjoyed pairing up to participate in all kinds of activities: dancing in the Lodge, kayaking and canoeing, creating masterpieces in the craft shop, playing Capture the Flag, learning about First Nations art, music, and dance, and much more. There’s so much to try at Camp! First-time campers are excited to dive into everything offered, and returning campers have their sights set on accomplishing new personal goals and honing their skills even further in specific areas. Our staff is eager to support all of them as they make the most of their four weeks here.

Voyageurs in the craft shop

Campers from the Voyageur unit found plenty to smile about as they worked on projects at the craft shop.

The first week of First Session is just flying by. And even more adventures await our campers in the days to come – what a wonderful prospect!
