Once a week, the entire Camp gathers together for a day of mutual reflection, engagement, and sharing. We call this special day “Anchor Day” because it offers us a consistent touchpoint for connecting to one another and to our values as a community.

Troubadours Chapel

The Troubadours led the whole Camp in a thoughtful Chapel service.

Every Anchor Day includes a non-denominational Chapel service hosted by one of the units. This week, the Troubadour unit led us through a time of reflection centered on the themes of tolerance and acceptance. Campers discussed the differences and similarities between the two and shared personal stories demonstrating the importance of these themes in their own lives.

When asked to describe a time when they felt accepted, many campers responded with the assertion that they have felt very accepted within the Camp community. The Troubadours closed the session by inviting everyone to reflect on why it’s important for each of us to ensure that Camp is a place of acceptance for everyone.

Musicale performers and audience

Everyone gathered around to listen to musical performances by campers and staff at Musicale.

Following Chapel, campers had field time with all of the units on the soccer field. Afterwards, everyone reconvened in the Lodge for a special Anchor Day dinner, complete with birthday cake (celebrating every camper who had a birthday during the past week) for dessert!

Then we all pitched in to rearrange the tables and chairs in the Lodge because it was time for Musicale. Every week, on Anchor Day, the whole camp gathers to watch performances by campers and staff alike. This sharing time is referred to as “Musicale,” although in addition to musical performances, participants can showcase skits, monologues, or special talents.

trumpeter Musicale

Our trumpet soloist’s performance blew everyone away!

Most of this week’s performers chose to offer musical selections. Campers played guitar, drums, trumpet, and piano, while others sang duets or even performed as an entire unit. Some acts invited the audience to join in with them! And a few of our Musicalers even shared original compositions or arrangements with the gathering. With great variety, mutual encouragement, and a big dash of fun, it was a memorable first Musicale of the session.

Foresters Musicale

The Foresters brought the energy with their dynamic group performance!

All in all, this Anchor Day was a fantastic way to end our first week at Camp, offering us the opportunity to train our focus on what we’d like the rest of the session to hold for us as a community. We’re confident that great things are in store!
