Camp has been a little smaller for the past few days, but for a wonderful reason: Big Trips are happening this week! The Big Trip program is one of the most beloved and highly anticipated elements of going to camp at Nor’wester. Many younger campers dream about what their Big Trip experience will be like and count down the summers until their Big Trip year.

Our paddlers are up to the challenge of a five day canoe trip!

For five days each session, campers from our four oldest units set out on a grand adventure. In small groups of 10 to 20 people total, campers embark on trips that are at once challenging and magical. Before Camp begins, campers in the Mountaineer, Troubadour, Islander, and Wayfarer units select their trip of choice. There are six incredible options to choose from, each unforgettable: There’s a sailing trip, a kayaking trip, a Hunt canoe trip, a biking trip, an alpine backpacking trip, and a mountaineering trip up to the summit of Mt. Baker.

Paddling practice on the shore ensures successful paddling on the water.

After spending Saturday packing and preparing for departure, our Big Trippers left Camp on Sunday morning for their five day experience. They’ll return to Camp on Thursday, and we can’t wait to hear all about their adventures. Because each trip group is made up of a mix of campers from the four oldest units, there is no doubt that right now new friendships are being formed and strong communities of tripmates are developing. While the physical and mental challenges of the Big Trips are real, so are the incredible relationships and irreplaceable memories that our campers bring back with them.

All set to push off!

We’re so proud of all our Big Trip participants, and we’re very excited to hear all about their experiences. We’ll be ready on Thursday to give them an exuberant welcome back to Camp!
