“Resilience” is something we talk about a lot at Camp. It’s a skill we strive to develop among our entire community, campers and staff included. It’s a growing edge we at Nor’wester value highly. Developing our resilience often involves participating in new and sometimes uncomfortable experiences. But just like the muscles in our body, our resilience “muscles” grow and strengthen with every new challenge we face. And each obstacle we overcome prepares us for the next.

In the midst of the new challenges and uncertainties that accompany the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, cultivating resilience is more important than ever. Luckily, one of our favorite child development resources comes from an expert in human resilience!

We are fortunate to have worked with Dr. Deborah Gilboa (Dr. G), learning from her expertise both at national conferences and from her in-person staff training sessions at Nor’wester. Dr. G is a great resource for any family, offering parenting, medical, and life advice. In this post she focuses on our current situation and suggests ideas for parents that are simple and accessible. She also has a link to her resource page for families to access during the Coronavirus Pandemic. And if you really want to get a taste for who she is, check out this TEDx talk that she did at Carnegie Mellon University.
